Damp Flexible Stone Packs: What to Check Before Installation

10月 30, 2026 リリー 8分で読めます

Damp packaging after a sea voyage is common, and it is not automatically a disaster. Condensation on the inside of a container is different from water that has soaked the packs, and the two require different responses. The mistake is to treat every damp carton as ruined — or, worse, to install the panels anyway because the face looks dry. This guide separates condensation from water ingress, lists what to inspect on flexible stone, explains how to dry it without damaging the backing, and sets out the evidence you need if the shipment becomes a claim.

Is damp packaging a defect or normal condensation?

A container crossing climates can form condensation as the air inside cools and warms. The moisture collects on the roof and walls and drips onto the top packs. In that case the outer packaging may be damp while the panels inside are dry, and the shipment is usually usable after inspection.

Water ingress is different. It means the packs have been exposed to rain, standing water, or a leaking container, and the moisture has reached the panels. Signs include wet inner wrapping, water marks on the sheet faces, softened or stained edges, a musty smell, and cartons that have lost their shape. The distinction matters because condensation is a handling note and water ingress is a potential claim.

Do not sign a clean delivery receipt before you have looked. Note the condition on the receipt, photograph the packs before opening, and keep the container and seal numbers in the same record. A signature is much harder to undo than a note.

What should I inspect on the panels themselves?

Open the packs in a dry, covered area and inspect a representative sample from different pallets, not just the top layer. Flexible stone is a thin composite — stone powder, an inorganic binder, and a fiberglass mesh backing — and moisture affects the layers differently.

  • Face. Look for water staining, tide marks, colour blotches, or a whitish haze that does not disappear when the surface dries.
  • Edges. Cut edges are the entry point for capillary water. Check for swelling, softness, fraying of the mesh, or separation between the face and the backing.
  • Backing. Look for lifted mesh, bubbles, soft spots, or a backing that peels when the panel is flexed gently.
  • Smell. A musty or chemical smell that persists after airing is a warning sign, not a cosmetic issue.
  • Flatness. Curl or wave that remains after the panel has relaxed flat may indicate moisture absorption.

Photograph each finding with the batch label in the same frame. A defect that cannot be tied to a batch is difficult to claim later.

How do I dry flexible stone safely?

The principle is air movement at ambient temperature, not heat. Unpack the sheets, separate them, and lay them flat on a clean, dry surface with space for air to circulate. Do not stack them tightly, do not leave them sealed in plastic, and do not use a heat gun, a space heater, or direct sunlight to speed the process — uneven heat can warp the sheet or damage the backing before the moisture has left.

Follow the acclimation and drying guidance in the installation manual for the specific product; the time depends on how wet the packs are and the ambient conditions. Do not install until the sheets and the substrate are both dry. A panel that feels dry on the face can still hold moisture at the cut edge or in the backing, which is where the adhesive bond will fail later.

Once the panels are dry, inspect them again. Moisture damage sometimes appears after drying, as staining or edge separation becomes visible.

When should I reject instead of dry?

Dry and use when the moisture was condensation and the panels pass the inspection after drying. Reject or claim when any of the following is true:

  • The backing has separated from the face, or the mesh lifts when the panel is flexed.
  • The edges are soft, swollen, or frayed beyond the cut allowance.
  • Staining or colour change remains after drying and does not match the approved sample.
  • A musty smell persists, suggesting mould in the backing or packaging.
  • The panels remain warped after relaxing flat.

Do not cut or install a questionable panel to “see if it works”. Once it is on the wall, the evidence is gone and the remedy becomes a removal.

What should the note on the delivery receipt say?

Write a factual note, not an accusation. A workable wording is: “Received with [number] pallets showing wet or damaged packaging; contents not yet inspected; shortage or damage to be confirmed after inspection.” Add the date and time, the container and seal numbers, and the driver’s name if it is on the paperwork. Photograph the note and the packaging before the driver leaves.

Do not sign a clean receipt and plan to “sort it out later”. The clean signature is the carrier’s evidence that the shipment arrived in good condition, and it shifts the argument onto you. If the driver refuses to wait for the note, record the refusal in writing and notify the carrier the same day.

The note does not replace the inspection; it preserves your position until the inspection happens. Keep it with the packing list, the bill of lading, and the photographs.

What evidence do I need for a claim?

Build the record before you move the material. Photograph the container and seal, the damp packaging, the inner wrapping, the panels, and the batch labels. Keep the packing list, the bill of lading, the delivery receipt with your note, and the COA for the batch. Record the moisture findings on a sample of panels from different pallets, with the panel IDs and the time of inspection.

Notify the supplier and the carrier in writing promptly, with the order number, the batch number, the affected quantity, and the photographs. Under FOB terms, risk passes when the goods are on board, so moisture that occurred during the voyage is usually a cargo insurance matter rather than a supplier defect; the ICC Incoterms® 2020規則 define where that transfer happens. The supplier still needs the evidence to support a packaging review on the next shipment.

What should I tell the installer?

Tell the installer three things: the material has been inspected and dried, which panels are approved for use, and which areas should be avoided. If any panel is questionable, mark it and keep it out of the installation. The installer should also check the substrate is dry before starting; a dry panel on a damp wall will fail at the bond line.

If the project schedule is tight, do not skip the drying step to catch up. A delay of a few days is cheaper than a wall that has to be removed. The packaging specification guide covers the protection that should have prevented the moisture in the first place.

How do I prevent it on the next shipment?

Specify the packaging details that manage moisture: a waterproof outer cover with ventilation so condensation can escape, dry packs before loading, and a moisture barrier that does not trap water against the sheets. Ask for dated photographs of the closed packs and the container loading, and check that the container itself is dry and free of holes before loading.

For long sea routes, the container’s position and the season matter. A route with large temperature swings is more likely to produce condensation, and a container that sits on deck or in direct sun behaves differently from one below deck. These are forwarder decisions, but the buyer can ask about them at booking. The container documents guide covers the paperwork that should travel with the shipment, and the フレキシブルストーンベニア製品群 lists the formats and thicknesses that affect packing density.

FAQ

Are damp packs always a write-off?
